Marcasite and pyrite are dimorphs. It is almost impossible for the amateur collector to distinguish between massive examples of these two species.
When crystalized, marcasite is more readily differentiated visually from pyrite. |

Species: MARCASITE Locality: Neal Mine Road, Unity, NH Specimen Size: 9 cm specimen of marcasite in 'chlorophyllite'. Chlorophyllite has now been determined to be primarily composed of mica (usually muscovite) and clay group minerals. Chlorophyllite is generally refered to as 'pinite'. Field Collected: Curt LaPlante Catalog No.: 1686 Notes: This is a Hitchcock locality. |
Species: MARCASITE Locality: Palermo Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 1.2 mm field of view. Clam shell-like marcasite crystals on siderite Field Collected: From a small box of small rock chunks gifted by Bob Whitmore Catalog No.: u1525 Notes: These bright golden marcasite crystals are within a siderite vug. The author [tm] has not seen a Palermo marcasite specimen previously. Marcasite is listed in the The Pegmatite Mines Known as Palermo book by Whitmore & Lawrence. |

Species: MARCASITE Locality: Bradsher Quarry, Rt 11, Farmington, NH Specimen Size: 2 mm field of view Field Collected: Tom Mortimer - 2015 (authorized visit) Catalog No.: u1812 Notes: This is the most distinct, classic, example of New Hampshire marcasite crystals I have seen to date, Sept., 2015. These came from a small, 1 cm, weathered zone in milky quartz. It was the only marcasite occurence I found in three hours at the quarry. |

Species: MARCASITE Locality: Palermo Mine, N. Groton, NH Specimen Size: 2.0 mm field of view Field Collected: Bob Whitmore - from a tub of Palermo phosphate rocks gifted by Bob. Catalog No.: u2460 Notes: A photo with diffused LED light to avoid bright flares. The metallic-bronze color of the marcasite is altered to brown-yellow by the lighting. |

Species: MARCASITE Locality: Palermo Mine, Groton, NH Specimen Size: 1.2 mm rhombic crystal Field Collected: From tub of rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore. Catalog No.: u2467 Notes: A visual identification. The true color is a bit more metallic bronze. To me, the growth structure on the bottom suggests marcasite. I don't think that this is a coated siderite xl. |
